We used to bet bats in the house before we got the roof fixed 10 years ago. Most bats do not have rabies. But, they absolutely can have it. We found a sick one in the driveway during the day 2 years ago. We had it tested and it did indeed have rabies. The CDC has a factual web site that will help you with any questions you have about rabies and bats. The link is below.

My daughter wasn’t bitten by a bat, but she did get bit by a wild animal and have to go through the series of rabies shots because unfortunately we could not catch the animal to have it tested. She was bitten on the hand so she initially had 7 injections around the bite site to stop spread of any potential infection which was incredibly painful(I don’t know which one of us were crying harder, me or her). But on the plus side the rabies shots are no longer given in the stomach, they are given IM in the arm over a period of 4 months. Needless to say, she has no problem getting needles anymore!
